  • 31 credits are required to complete this degree program.
  • 12.5 credits are required for this major. Courses for this major come from ESTS, BIOL, ECON, SOCI, ANTH, POLS, CHEM, MATH, PHYS, COMM, or PHIL.
  • To make good academic progress, take 4 course credits each semester.
  • Requirements for the Environmental Studies and Sustainability Major are included. Fill in the remaining credits every semester with Core Requirements (see guidelines below) or general electives.

Additional Notes:

  1. FYQR 120 may be met by a QR waiver. If taken in the fall, delay the Science elective until the following year. BIOL 150 is recommended as the Science elective for the first semester. BIOL meets the Scientific Inquiry Core requirement.
  2. A total of 3 credits of Science electives is required to complete the Environmental Studies and Sustainability major, 2 must be at or above the 200 level.
  3. A research methods course is required. It can be BIOL 210 or a research methods course from another department. BIOL 210 and PSYC 201 both meet the Quantitative Reasoning in Practice Core requirement.
  4. A total of 2 credits of Humanities/Social Science electives is required to complete the Environmental Studies and Sustainability major.
  5. A list of options for Science and Humanities/Social Science electives can be found on the Requirements webpage.
  6. A course of capstone research is required. These can be BIOL 440 (0.5 cr.) in the fall and BIOL 450 (0.5 cr.) in the spring, or it can be another department’s capstone research course.

Guidelines for Core Requirements:

  • Core Foundations area courses – to be completed in the first year.
  • Core Inquiry area courses – recommended to complete one each year.
    • At least one Inquiry course is offered within the Major requirements.
  • Core Engagement area courses – recommended to complete one each year.
    • Check if an Engagement course is offered within the Major requirements.
