Immediate impact

Work with faculty and local teachers in their classrooms to integrate the community’s culture, economy and ecology into learning. A partnership between the Educational Studies Department and local districts, PLACE (Partnerships Linking Assets, Community and Education) teaching sites are where place-based education is at the core of every learning experience.

At PLACE sites, you’ll learn how to teach with place in mind as you design hands-on community impact projects, connect with local experts, and incorporate the area’s natural environment into your teaching. You’ll experience first-hand the incredible impact of place-based education on student engagement, empowerment and community involvement.

Monmouth is the first school in the nation to merge a place-based education program and a rural teacher corps to become Illinois’ place-based education hub and the national headquarters for the Rural Schools Collaborative.
