Islam 101
New Monmouth College series, scheduled throughout month, to kick off April 6
Many misconceptions and fears about Islam continue to circulate in society.
In the spirit of offering a space for well-meaning people to better understand this religious tradition, members of the College community have put together a series of informal talks to address some of the general subjects about which people often wonder when it comes to Muslims and the Islamic faith.
The kickoff event will be held at 7 p.m. April 6 in the Pattee Auditorium of the College’s Center for Science and Business.
Free and open to the public, the first talk, titled “Islam 101,” coincides with national Better Together Day, hosted by the Interfaith Youth Core and the College’s chapter of Better Together.
It will feature a panel discussion moderated by Professor Hannah Schell. The panel will include Monmouth graduates Hind Allouch ’16 and Richard Harrod ’07 and faculty member Petra Kuppinger. They will speak about, respectively, The Qu’ran, the life of Muhammad and the five pillars of Islam.
“At the opening event, people will be invited to jot down questions and submit them anonymously so that we can direct the teach-in toward those inquiries,” said Schell.
The subsequent sessions will take place on April 9, April 20 and April 27. The April 9 session will begin at 5 p.m., with the other two being held at 7 p.m. Topics to be addressed include, respectively, “Jesus in Islam,” the difference between Sunni and Shi’a, and women in Islam.
“Our goal is to foster a helpful conversation about this often misunderstood and maligned religious tradition,” said Schell.
