For Senior Jon Welty, people may assume that attending Monmouth College is a family tradition. After all, his father and two older brothers graduated from MC. But for Jon, it was also a personal decision. Jon decided to come to Monmouth because it felt like it was the right fit for him. In his four years as a Fighting Scot, Jon has made the MC experience his own by becoming highly involved in athletics and other various organizations around campus. A star runner, Jon credits athletics for helping him stay on track, literally and figuratively: “The coaching staff here at Monmouth have really helped me throughout my time. They put some responsibility on my shoulders as far as keeping my grades in check and being a leader on a varsity athletic team.”
Jon plans to attend graduate school next fall for sports management, a career path he would not have attempted without advice from the coaching staff here at MC. Originally entering Monmouth as a Pre-Med Chemistry major, Jon changed his major to Public Relations and Business after his realization that Pre-Med was not the right course from him. While this was not an easy decision, Jon cites the support and guidance of his coaches as a critical factor to his success. Of the support and advising he has received from MC faculty and staff, Jon says: “Those relationships are key. They want you to learn by yourself but they are there to guide you and influence you in a positive way.
