Former concertmaster Shaker ’15 to perform as part of April 7 event
MONMOUTH, Ill. – A duet featuring a past and current concertmaster of the Monmouth College Chamber Orchestra will be among the highlights of an April 7 performance.
Directed by music faculty member Carolyn Suda, the Chamber Orchestra will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Kasch Performance Hall of the College’s Dahl Chapel and Auditorium.
“The concert will offer a variety of music from the classical period through film music from Hollywood,” said Suda.
The orchestra’s former concertmaster, 2015 graduate Mariela Shaker, will join current concertmaster Iman Abdulrazzak ’18 for a Shostakovich duet.
“These two Syrian students have been such an important part of music at Monmouth,” said Suda.
Abdulrazzak will also share the spotlight for two other selections: with Holly Reyner ’21 of Independence, Iowa, in what Suda called “Vivaldi’s beautiful and stirring Concerto Grosso in A minor for two violins”; and with music faculty member Solee Clark for Albinoni’s Adagio for violin and organ.
A movement from Haydn’s Symphony No. 80 will open the concert, followed by two Romantic works: an “exciting” Dance of the Tumblers by Rimsky-Korsakov and a “beautiful” string Adagio by Dvorak.
The Spanish Fandango by Boccherini, featuring Oscar Diaz ’18 of Chicago on percussion, and orchestral highlights from the film La La Land will conclude the concert.
