Poetry reading
Award-winning Janice Harrington to read from her works Feb. 28
Award-winning poet Janice Harrington will read from her works Feb. 28 at Monmouth College.
Free and open to the public, Harrington’s reading will be at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 28 in the Barnes Electronic Classroom in the lower level of Monmouth’s Hewes Library.
A poet, children’s author and former librarian, Harrington teaches creative writing at the University of Illinois.
Her first book of poetry, Even the Hollow My Body Made Is Gone (2007), won the A. Poulin, Jr. Poetry Prize from BOA Editions and the Kate Tufts Discovery Award. Her second book of poetry, The Hands of Strangers: Poems from the Nursing Home, came out in 2011, and her third book, Primitive: The Art and Life of Horace H. Pippin, was published last year.
“Janice’s work about the artist Horace Pippin weaves together a deep sense of history with a really lyrical sensibility,” said Monmouth Assistant Professor of English David Wright. “She’s such a generous reader, too.”
While on campus, Harrington will also work with students in creative writing courses and classes.
Part of a spring series of visiting poets and authors, Harrington’s visit is sponsored by Monmouth’s English department.
