Chamber Choir part of three-concert series to conclude semester
MONMOUTH, Ill. – A vocal concert featuring Monmouth College’s most selective choral group is part of a series of musical performances on campus as the spring semester draws to a close.
Under the direction of Associate Professor of Music Tim Pahel, the Chamber Choir will present its concert at 7:30 p.m. April 28, joined that evening by two a capella groups – the Sassy Lassies and a new coed group, the Highland Harmonizers, which was started by Thomas Burkhead, a senior from Wood Dale, Ill.
Other concerts in the semester-ending series will be the Concert Band and Wind Ensemble at 2 p.m. April 29 and the Monmouth College Pipe Band at 7:30 p.m. April 30.
All three concerts are free and open to the public.
“The Chamber Choir is the most selective of our choral groups on campus,” said Pahel of the 14-student group. “We are doing great repertoire of a wide variety of styles, from the Renaissance to contemporary popular music.”
Highlights will include a “beautiful” arrangement of the American folk tune “All the Pretty Little Horses,” and “a serene and stunning piece” in French by Saint-Saens titled “Calme des nuits.”
The Chamber Choir will also perform “an upbeat, popular-style piece” called “Since You’ve Been Gone” by Anders Edenroth, “a funny, tongue-in-cheek” setting of the Lewis Carroll poem “Jabberwocky” by Sam Pottle, Renaissance music by Peter Philips and English romantic music by Edward Elgar.
Also featured, said Pahel, will be “a fast and funny” setting of “I’m a Train,” originally by Albert Hammond and Mike Hazelwood, arranged by Peter Knight from the King’s Singers.
