The Monmouth College Chamber Orchestra will present a concert on April 13 at 2 p.m. in the Kasch Performance Hall of Dahl Chapel and Auditorium.
Performing a wide variety of music, the orchestra will be directed by music lecturer Carolyn Suda.
“A central piece will be Schubert’s sunny, springtime ‘Fifth Symphony,’” she said. “Here, Schubert shows off his gift for effortless, sweet melody combined with dramatic harmony.”
Tchaikovsky’s “Elegy” for string orchestra, filled with “powerful and deep melody,” will be contrasted by Tchaikovsky’s exciting “Cossack Dance” for winds and strings.
“A fun, jazzy piece by Alex Safford, ‘Folk Tune Air and Fiddler’s Fury,’ adds American exuberance to the program,” noted Suda.
Syrian student Mariela Shaker will be featured in the wild “Bollywood Strings” for violin and strings. Brandon Oullette, a senior from Galesburg, appears as oboe soloist in the “hauntingly beautiful” theme from the film “The Mission” by Morricone.
Short works by Dvorak and Vivaldi complete the program.
