Four students received special awards at Monmouth College’s annual honors convocation last week.
Senior and Freshman Man of the Year honors were awarded by the Monmouth chapter of Blue Key Honor Society, a national organization recognizing upperclassmen for outstanding character and ability and distinction in service, leadership and scholarship.
The Senior Man of the Year was Jonathan Welty of Dixon. A business administration and public relations major, he is the son of Jean and Joseph Welty of Dixon.
Jacob McLean of Silvis was named Freshman Man of the Year. The son of Linda and Dan McLean of Silvis, he is studying psychology.
Senior and Freshman Woman of the Year honors were awarded by the Tau Pi chapter of Mortar Board, a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for scholarship, leadership, service and scholarship.
The Senior Woman of the Year was Samantha Jagust, a French major from Lockport. She is the daughter of Michelle and Paul Jagust.
Mackenzie Mahler of Bourbonnais was named Freshman Woman of the Year. The daughter of Pamela Mahler of Bourbonnais and Donald Mahler of Minooka, she is studying psychology and is a Midwest Scholar.
Next year’s president and vice president for the Associated Students of Monmouth College, MC’s student government organization, were also announced at the convocation. The president for the 2011-12 academic year will be Katey Shipp, a junior from Ladd, and the vice president will be Dillon Harris , a sophomore from Dwight. Shipp, who is majoring in business administration, is the daughter of Alora Zigler of Ladd and Robert Shipp of Kingston. Harris, a biochemistry major, is the son of Marion and Timothy Harris of Dwight.
