Pianist Scott Kirby to open new MLCCS season

MONMOUTH, Ill. – Visual artist, pianist and composer Scott Kirby will take the stage for the first Maple Leaf Community Concert Series event of the 2017-18 season, to be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 12 in the Kasch Performance Hall of the Monmouth College Dahl Chapel and Auditorium.

Kirby specializes in American and Pan-American musical genres, combining the worlds of classical, folk and popular music. That family of styles includes classic ragtime, blues, traditional jazz and Creole, among others.

As a performer, Kirby is also an educator, providing historical context and musical insight as his programs unfold.

The artist was featured on a segment on CBS News Sunday Morning, and he has also appeared at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.

Time hailed Kirby as an “ace pianist,” while CBS News Sunday Morning reported that “critics call Scott Kirby one of the best interpreters of ragtime music on the scene today.”

Kirby co-founded a record company (Viridiana Productions), has made 25 recordings, and has composed more than 150 original works for piano and other instruments.

Tickets are $30 at the door. Students and Monmouth College personnel with an ID are admitted free. For more information, call the Monmouth Area Chamber of Commerce at 309-734-3181 or email
