Members of the editorial staff of Monmouth College’s student newspaper, The Courier, have received three awards from the Illinois College Press Association (ICPA).

The awards, presented earlier this month in Chicago during the annual convention of the ICPA, were part of the 2010 Awards for Excellence in Illinois College Newspapers competition. Monmouth competed in the category for non-daily newspapers at colleges with less than 4,000 students.

Kyla Quigley, a freshman from Naperville, won first place for a sports photo taken at a men’s soccer practice. Kelsey Beshears, a junior from Milan, won third place for a sports game story. Titled “New scoreboard, new mascot, new quarterback,” the story recapped the Scots’ eventful first home game of the football season. Adam Kinigson, a senior from Bolingbrook, received an honorable mention in headline writing for “E=MC delicious for new Einstein Bagel shop.”

Founded in 1983, the ICPA has 42 member colleges and universities throughout Illinois. Its purpose is to stimulate greater interest and development in journalism and to raise the standards of journalism among its member institutions.
