College to host pair of concerts Nov. 10-12

MONMOUTH, Ill. – Monmouth College will host a pair of concerts Nov. 10 and Nov. 12 in the Kasch Performance Hall of Dahl Chapel and Auditorium, including the return to campus of accomplished violinist Mariela Shaker, who graduated from Monmouth in 2015.

Shaker will perform during the Monmouth Chamber Orchestra’s concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10. The Wind Ensemble will present its annual fall concert at 2 p.m. Nov. 12.

The Chamber Orchestra will be joined by the Monmouth Chorale for a repeat performance of modern composer Ola Gjeilo’s haunting “Luminous Night of the Soul.”

Shaker will be the featured soloist in Fritz Kreisler’s famous “Liebesleid (Love’s Sorrow).”

“We are delighted that Mariela will be returning to assist the Monmouth Chamber Orchestra,” said the group’s director, music lecturer Carolyn Suda.

The concert will begin a “famous and charming” work by Mozart, “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.”

“The central work of the concert is the scherzo from Dvorak’s exquisite ‘Serenade for String Orchestra in E Major, op. 22,’” said Suda. “This work shows Dvorak’s brilliance in both lyrical melody and folk flavor.”

A “beautiful” sarabande by Benjamin Britten and a “jazzy” string piece by William Safford will round out the program.
