Scots advance to round 2 of playoffs with 3OT victory

The Fighting Scots rebounded from an early 17-0 deficit to defeat Illinois Wesleyan 33-27 in triple overtime and advance to the second round of the NCAA Div. III playoffs.


Monmouth got on the board with just 1:30 left in the first half when Nick Law scored on a seven-yard run. After an Alex Tanney touchdown pass to Trey Yocum in the third period, Matt Batton kicked a 38-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to tie the game.


After exchanging touchdowns in the first overtime and field goals in the second overtime, Preston Lumzy recovered a Titans fumble at the two-yard line in the third overtime. Yocum tallied the winning score from seven yards out.


The Scots will travel to St. Paul, Minn., next Saturday to play in the second round of the playoffs at noon against No. 4-ranked University of St. Thomas. The Tommies beat St. Scholastica 48-2 on Saturday.


Playoff tickets for the Monmouth-St. Thomas matchup will go on sale on game day. There will be no advance ticket sales. Ticket windows at the 4,500-seat O’Shaughnessy Stadium will open at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Gates will open at 11 a.m. Adult tickets are $8, student prices with ID are $4.


Game coverage will also be available locally on WRAM AM 1330. Live stats, audio and video will also be streamed at A charter bus for fans will leave Friday.
