William Trimble, Monmouth College custodial services manager, was recently presented with the Patriotic Employer Award by the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR).
The award was presented by ESGR military liaison Bob Schwieder on behalf of retired Army Sgt. Allen Smith, who nominated Trimble for the award, based on his support during the 12 months in 2007-2008 that Smith spent on active duty in Iraq. Trimble supervises Smith, who has been a member of the college’s utility staff since 2006.
Also present for the ceremony was retired Army Col. Stephen Bloomer, Monmouth College’s director of development and principal gifts, who formerly served as chief of staff for the Iowa Army National Guard. “Monmouth College, as a signatory of the seven seal ESGR pledge of support, believes in and promotes active citizenship, volunteerism, and selfless service.” Bloomer said. “Our National Guard and Reserve service members demonstrate the ideals that Monmouth College has come to embrace.”
Smith initially served in the Guard from 1985-2000, before deciding to reenlist in 2006. After training for two months in Texas, Smith’s unit went first to Kuwait before being assigned to an airbase 50 miles from Baghdad. During his tour, Smith’s duties included serving as Sergeant of the Guard of a Control Entry Point, Convoy Security with Bravo Company 3/116 Infantry (Virginia), and operating a Small Arms Shop for the 39th Infantry Division (Arkansas) and the 82nd Airborne Division (Fort Bragg, N.C.).
“Monmouth College was a tremendous source of support during my year of active duty,” said Smith, who retired from the Army last November. “They sent me several care packages with food and Western novels, which I particularly enjoy.”
Both Trimble and Smith are residents of Monmouth.
ESGR is a Department of Defense agency that seeks to develop and promote a culture in which all American employers support and value the military service of their employees with ESGR as the principal advocate within DoD. It does so by advocating relevant initiatives, recognizing outstanding support, increasing awareness of applicable laws, and resolving conflict between employers and service members.
