MC students turning internships into 'win-win' experiences

A visit to campus last spring by one of Monmouth College’s many successful alumni paved the way to summer internships for three students.
 
Juniors Clayton Brundige of Elburn and Dillon Lehr of Knoxville have full-time internships at ENFOS, Inc., a commercial software company that helps companies manage their environmental impacts and cleanups on contaminated property through their advanced, high-tech software solutions. They learned about the Naperville company when its co-founder and executive vice president Roger Well, a 1986 Monmouth graduate, worked with several business classes throughout the spring semester. Well conducted on-campus interviews for internships, and also landing a part-time summer position with the company was his daughter, senior Madison Well.
 
“(Business professor) Terry Gabel, (vice president) Steve Bloomer and (Wackerle Career and Leadership Center staff member) Marnie Dugan played a key role in engaging me with the students and getting the ball rolling on this idea,” said Well. “As a Monmouth graduate, I am very happy to have a group of Monmouth students helping us out this summer. The exposure to a high-tech company like ENFOS and to a very exciting field of study is invaluable to them. The foundation that each of the interns has brought to us from Monmouth is very strong. They are all fast learners, very conscientious about doing good work, strong team players and problem solvers. It is a win-win solution for ENFOS, Monmouth, and the students.”
 
The students are spending the summer researching data from businesses on the Forbes 2000 list. They are also working on a project to create an infographic on the ENFOS website. When all the data is compiled, the graphic will show environmental liabilities by industry and country.
 
“Their role this summer is research analyst,” explained Well. “They are performing financial research on Global 2000 companies that are part of our study group for the Global Environmental Liability Research Project.”
 
“The company will use this data in two ways – the first being for its sales and marketing team,” reported Lehr. “The sales force will use the data we have collected to determine which companies are a good fit for ENFOS software and also so they can be better prepared when the time comes to give a sales pitch.”
 
Though they are working together, each student feels that Monmouth has prepared them in different ways.
 
“Recently, I was enrolled in a class called Corporate Social Responsibility, taught by (visiting assistant professor) Julie Rothbardt,” said Lehr. “It focused on many aspects of a corporation and how it should act, both ethically and legally. We explored many areas and spent a lot of time on environmental aspects, which I now work with every day.”
 
“Monmouth helped me prepare for this internship by teaching me helpful research tactics in my history classes,” said Well, who is also participating in an internship at the Art Institute of Chicago, working in the Ryerson and Burnham Archives.
 
“Those archives deal mainly with the architecture of Chicago and hold the archives for the Columbian Exhibition in Chicago 1892 and many other world fairs,” she said. “I am working on a project that deals with Carson Pirie Scott, and I am going through donated materials dating back to 1859. I am organizing them, creating a finding aid and helping catalog the items. Monmouth really helped me get this internship because it offers archival classes that taught me the skills needed to do all of this.”
