Jane Simonsen, associate professor of history at Augustana College, will present MC’s fourth annual Labor Day Lecture on Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. in the Barnes Electronic Classroom on the lower level of Hewes Library.

Free and open to the public, Simonsen’s lecture is titled “Nobody Smiles Doing Housework But Those Ladies You See on TV: Housework and Women’s Activism in U.S. History.”

The value of housework has been a much-debated subject in the United States. Should those doing housework be paid? Who should do it? How do housework and political activism coincide?

Simonsen will discuss changing attitudes about “women’s work,” revealing some surprising ways Americans in general, and women in particular, have thought about the meaning of work and the meaning of equality since 1830.

Some of the issues Simonsen will discuss are also featured in “The Help,” which is currently the No. 1 movie in the U.S.
