ScotSpeak, Monmouth College’s speech and debate team, competed at the Mid-America Forensic League speech tournament at Northern Illinois University on Jan. 25, sending one competitor on to the finals.
Ellen Johnson, a freshman from Kewanee, became ScotSpeak’s first finals-breaking student of the season, finishing sixth in the prose competition.
“Our whole team did really well, and making it into the finals was just the icing on the cake,” said Johnson, an elementary education major. “I ended up in a round that was full of fantastic performers, and it was great to compete with such talent.”
Johnson also competed in duo interpretation alongside classmate Cole Downey of Geneva, and Downey competed individually in poetry. Junior Aimee Miller of Lake in the Hills competed in program oral interpretation, prose and impromptu.
ScotSpeak will return to competition Feb. 14-15 at the Litrenta Triangle speech tournament at Harper College.
