The staff of the Monmouth College student newspaper, The Courier, came within one award of tying its record for the most honors won at the 31st annual Illinois College Press Association (ICPA) conference Feb. 21-22 in Chicago, an event attended by a number of notable journalists and editors.
“The Courier took home four awards last year, so we are excited to have more than doubled that amount for this year,” said editor Stevie Croisant, a senior from Hennepin. “I’m extremely proud to have such a dedicated staff, especially a staff that’s comprised almost entirely of first-year editors. It’s great to know we’ve been able to keep our paper competitive with other schools in the state.”
Three staff members led the way with runner-up finishes, including sophomore Kelsi Ford of Geneseo for general news photo and seniors Cameron Line of Galesburg and Mike Olszewski of Cary for headline writing.
Third-place honors went to Line for a sports news story and recent graduate Kyle McEwen of Aledo for a sports column.
Ford and Olszewski received honorable mention in the Shoot Chicago photo competition and sports game story categories, respectively. Other honorable mentions went to senior Kimarri Campbell of Sterling for a sports photo and junior Mackenzie Mahler of Bourbonnais for front page layout.
