Tanney signs with Dallas Cowboys

Update: Alex Tanney signed with the Dallas Cowboys on July 21.
Former Monmouth College quarterback Alex Tanney's NFL dream could get new life this week with the Dallas Cowboys.

A report on the Cowboys' website says the team plans to sign Tanney – the NCAA's all-time touchdown passing leader – pending a physical once the team arrives in Oxnard, Calif., for its preseason camp.

Tanney, who spent last year's NFL season on Kansas City's injured reserve list after being hurt in the team's final preseason game, was one of three quarterbacks and five wide receivers invited to Tuesday's workout in Dallas as the Cowboys looked to fill what turned out to be three spots on their preseason roster.

If he passes the team's physical, it would be the second year in a row Tanney has earned a preseason roster spot as a free agent, filling the same position last July with the Chiefs under then-head coach Romeo Crennel. His signing with the Cowboys would come just a month after his older brother, Mitch Tanney, who was also a Fighting Scot QB, was hired by the Chicago Bears to fill their newly-created the director of analytics position.

Dallas – which departed for Oxnard today – will open their preseason games at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game against Miami on Aug. 4 in Canton, Ohio.

Tanney was released by Kansas City in May and had since been maintaining his workout routine in hopes of another invite.
