Talking Turkey

Susan Holm, Monmouth College’s Dorothy Donald Professor of Modern Foreign Languages, will present the first International Luncheon lecture of the new academic year on Oct. 6 at noon in the Whiteman-McMillan Highlander Room of the college’s Stockdale Center.

Titled “The Family Of Love from East to West: Evolving U.S. and Turkish Families and Friendships,” Holm’s talk will chronicle her relationship with the Sevgi family, one of the first families she met on her first trip to Turkey in 1966. At that time, the family consisted of a mother, a father, six daughters and a son. Over the years, the children have married and moved, but Holm has been able to see some of them during each trip she has made to Turkey.

“This summer’s trip included, among other experiences, the wedding of one of the granddaughters,” said Holm, who will share stories of that event, as well as other highlights from the trip.

A buffet lunch, featuring international foods, is available. A meal ticket may be purchased for $7.25 in the food service office in Stockdale Center. Lunch reservations must be made in advance by calling 309-457-2149, but anyone may attend the presentation without obligation to purchase the meal.
