Four students received special awards at Monmouth College’s annual honors convocation this week.

Senior and Freshman Man of the Year honors were awarded by the Monmouth chapter of Blue Key Honor Society, a national organization recognizing upperclassmen for outstanding character and ability and distinction in service, leadership and scholarship.

The Senior Man of the Year was Matt Jefferson of Andalusia. A biopsychology major, he is the son of Raymond and Gail Jefferson of Andalusia.

Corbin Beastrom of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was named Freshman Man of the Year. The son of Dave and Peggy Beastrom of Cedar Rapids, he is studying political science.

Senior and Freshman Woman of the Year honors were awarded by the Tau Pi chapter of Mortar Board, a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for scholarship, leadership, service and scholarship.

The Senior Woman of the Year was Kristen Wyse, a classics and history major from Woodstock. She is the daughter of Thomas and Denise Wyse of Woodstock.

Emily Danger of Port Byron was named Freshman Woman of the Year. The daughter of Mark and Ann Danger of Port Byron, she is studying public relations.

Next year’s president and vice president for the Associated Students of Monmouth College, MC’s student government organization, were also announced at the convocation. The president for the 2011-12 academic year will be Alex Holt, a junior from Evanston, and the vice president will be Katey Shipp, a sophomore from Ladd. Holt, who is majoring in English and business administration, is the son of Christopher Holt of Fox River Grove and Jean Rhodes of Evanston. Shipp, an exploratory major, is the daughter of Robert Shipp and Alora Zigler of Ladd.
