Hutchinson to answer ‘why college’ during Associates program

MONMOUTH, Ill. – Why do students enroll in college? And what draws them to Monmouth College, in particular?

Laura Hutchinson, Monmouth’s new vice president for student life and dean of students, will answer those questions at the next Monmouth Associates program at noon Nov. 16 in the Whiteman-McMillan Highlander Room of Stockdale Center.

Last summer, Hutchinson was selected from a strong national pool of candidates to lead the College’s student life departments, which includes athletics and intramurals, career and leadership services, Greek life, intercultural life, residence life, and religious and spiritual life.

During her talk, she will draw from her 25 years of student life experience to discuss her views on what students hope to achieve in college, as well as the distinctive differences that a Monmouth College education provides. She will also comment on the challenges and opportunities faced by residential liberal arts colleges and the shifting demographics of college-bound high school students.

Hutchinson came to Monmouth from Earlham (Ind.) College, where she was most recently vice president for student life.

The cost for a buffet lunch is $10 ($9 for Monmouth faculty and staff). Reservations can be made by calling 309-457-2231 by Nov. 14 or by email at alumni@monmouthcollege.edu.

A free shuttle van transports passengers from two locations to every Associates luncheon. The van stops at the northeast quadrant of the Public Square at 11:45 a.m. and at the Faith United Presbyterian Church parking lot at around 11:50 a.m. It returns to both locations immediately following the program.
