Monmouth College will host a dance performance and a pair of concerts the weekend of Feb. 21-23, featuring mostly college ensembles. Admission to all events is free.
On Feb. 21, the Colorful Voices of Praise dance team will be part of a “Dance Explosion” at 7 p.m. in Wells Theater. Also performing will be the Monmouth College Dance Team, the Colorful Voices of Praise mime ensemble and the Umoja Steppers.
On Feb. 22, the Colorful Voices of Praise gospel choir will follow up by hosting a “Gospel Explosion” at 7 p.m. in the Kasch Performance Hall of Dahl Chapel. Also performing will the Umoja Community Choir, Knox College Gospel, the 1-Akord Praise Team from Peoria, the Northwoods Community Church worship group from Galesburg and jazz vocalist Semenya McCord.
On Feb. 23, the Monmouth Wind Ensemble and the Concert Band will present a concert at 2 p.m. in Dahl Chapel.
“Both groups have a wonderful variety of music on the program,” said director Matthew Wanken. “The Concert Band will play a beautiful arrangement of ‘Amazing Grace’ by Frank Ticheli, a march by famed circus band leader Karl King and a catchy medley of tunes from ‘The Music Man.’”
The Wind Ensemble will feature pieces by notable band composers such as Malcom Arnold, Gordon Jacob and John Philip Sousa. A highlight of the program will be a “wonderful” arrangement of Dimitri Shostakovitch’s “Folk Dances,” which Wanken said “is filled with the joy and love the composer felt for his country.”
