Horn of Africa

Barry McNamara
Monmouth College political science professor Ira Smolensky will introduce the topic “Horn of Africa” at the next Great Decisions program on Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Tartan Room of the college’s Stockdale Center.

Since the early 1990s, the U.S. has monitored the Horn of Africa due to security concerns. Internal instability, weak governments in some countries, regional rivalries and a lack of development have resulted in an environment conducive to terrorism. Can the U.S. protect its national interests while mitigating the dangerous conditions in the region?

Following Smolensky’s opening remarks, there will be approximately one hour of group discussion.

Great Decisions is a nationwide program sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association, a non-partisan, non-governmental association that works to increase Americans’ understanding of significant foreign policy issues.
