Dan Cotter ’88 has been nominated for GQ magazine’s “Better Men Better World” award. Nominees are men who strive every day for the betterment of society through charitable work, volunteerism and community involvement.
“In addition to being a respected Chicagoland attorney, Dan is an extraordinary community volunteer,” wrote Mary Mosley Stahl ’87 in her nomination. “I’ve told him more than once how wonderful it is that he provides such a great model for his two young sons of how to lead a good life while also helping others.”
One outstanding example of Cotter’s community service is his involvement with the Lawyers Lend-A-Hand for Youth program. Nine years ago, he turned his weightlifting hobby into a fundraising initiative. He often receives pledges of $1 per pound, meaning a good day for his three lifts – a bench press, a deadlift and a squat – result in single donations of $1,500 or more. To date, Cotter has raised more than $175,000 to support one-on-one tutor and mentor programs for disadvantaged youth in Chicago.
