12:00 PM » Meaning of Life Lunch (Sam Thompson Society)
A time to share thoughts on the questions that shape our lives. Nothing is too strange or too trivial, too big or too curious. Someone proposes a question or issue, and we follow our curiosity to see where it leads. Bring a lunch, bring a friend, and join us for an hour of food for thought.
Weeks House

1:00 PM - 4:00 PM » Midwest Matters Symposium
While the formal dedication of the new Center for Science and Business took place in May, the “intellectual christening” of the Center takes place during Homecoming. At this year’s Midwest Matters symposium, the issue of global hunger will be explored from a variety of angles of great importance to our region: How will the Midwest be impacted by changes in modern agriculture? What public policy measures can best maintain the Midwest’s role in feeding the world? What role will innovative local initiatives, such as the Monmouth College Educational Garden, play in a dynamic global agricultural environment?

The keynote speaker for the event is Roger Thurow, author of The Last Hunger Season: A Year in an African Farm Community on the Brink of Change and Enough: Why the World’s Poorest Starve in an Age of Plenty. He is the senior fellow for global agriculture and food policy at The Chicago Council on Global Affairs.  Thurow joined the Council in January 2010 after three decades at the Wall Street Journal.
