Dr. David  Shawver ’70 is the son of the late MC professor Benjamin Shawver. Following his marriage to Amy Vickers ’70 in 1971, the couple entered the Peace Corps, where they taught English in a Kurdish village in Iran. Returning to North America, David completed his doctorate in philosophy at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

 

The Shawvers began a career of working in U.S. State Department-supported schools in 1979 in Zaire. Often serving 50 or more nationalities, they prepare their students to be able to function globally in leadership positions. Shawver has served as principal or school head in Karachi, Pakistan, Burma, Bangladesh, China and Tanzania. Amy taught a number of subjects, specializing in middle school English later in her career. Together the Shawvers participated in the explosive growth of international schooling.

 

Currently on an educational assignment in Tunisia, Shawver most recently served as president of the Association of International Schools in Africa while he was headmaster of the International School of Tanganyika. He has also served as president of the Association of China and Mongolia International Schools, on the board of the East Asian Regional Council of Schools and as a commissioner for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
