Frederick W. Wackerle ’61
Fred Wackerle retired recently from a 40-year career in executive search consulting, specializing in CEO succession. He has counseled CEOs and successfully recruited CEO successors, senior officers and board members for such top companies as Biogen, Citicorp, MassMutual, Owens Corning and Whirlpool.
For every year since a popular ranking service began, Wackerle has been named one of the nation’s top five general management search consultants . He was honored with the Gardner Heidrick Award from the Association of Executive Search Consultants for outstanding contributions to the executive search consulting profession.
A contributor of more than 40 articles and op-ed pieces to leading national business publications, he is the author of a new book on CEO succession and board governance titled “The Right CEO: Straight Talk About Making Tough CEO Selection Decisions.”
While Wackerle made a clear impact in the world of executive search consulting, he has been equally important to his alma mater, serving on its board of trustees for more than 30 years and endowing the college with the Wackerle Career & Leadership Center. He has also supported Monmouth College through two scholarships, Founders Village, the Annual Fund, the Ben Shawver Meeting Room and an estate gift.
An artist member of the Tucson Plein Air Painter’s Society (TPAPS), The Palette & Chisel Academy of Chicago and Chicago Plein Air Painters, Wackerle had his first solo show in 2005. In 2010, his oil painting “Capistrano Square” received first prize in the national juried exhibition at Monmouth’s Buchanan Center for the Arts.
