Program Requirements

Requirements for the Sociology and Anthropology Major:

A major in Sociology/Anthropology requires 9.25 courses in the department:

SOCI 101 or SOCI 102 or ANTH 103

SOAN 301 Theories of Culture and Society

SOAN 302 Methods of Social Research (Prerequisites MATH 106, minimum grade of C−)

SOAN 410 Research Preparation

SOAN 420 Senior Research

Five additional courses, at least four of which must be above the 100 level. Of these five courses, a minimum of two must be taken in both Sociology (SOCI) and Anthropology (ANTH).

The departmental requirements allow for considerable flexibility to meet individual students’ needs. For example, for those students interested in pursuing a career in which field experience at the undergraduate level is recommended, an internship (SOAN 310) with an appropriate agency should be considered. Also, SOAN 420 (Research Seminar) can be specifically tailored to serve an individual student’s academic and career interests. Additionally, an off-campus study program such as the ACM (Associated Colleges of the Midwest) Urban Studies Program is recommended for all majors.

A minor in Sociology and Anthropology requires five courses in the department:

SOCI 101 or SOCI 102 or ANTH 103

SOAN 301 Theories of Culture and Society

SOAN 302 Methods of Social Research

Two additional courses at the 200 or 300 level. Of these two courses, one must be taken in Sociology (SOCI) and one in Anthropology (ANTH).

(This minor is not available to Sociology and Anthropology majors.)

A minor in Sociology requires five courses in the department:

Two additional Sociology courses at the 200 or 300 level.

Requirements for the Anthropology Minor:

A minor in Anthropology requires five courses in the department:

ANTH 103

SOAN 301 Theories of Culture and Society

SOAN 302 Methods of Social Research

Two additional Anthropology courses at the 200 or 300 level.

(This minor is not available to Sociology and Anthropology majors.)

Requirements for the Human Services Concentration:

A major in Sociology/Anthropology with a Human Services Concentration requires 13.25 courses in the department and 4 courses outside the department. Requirements include:

  • SOCI180 Introduction to Human Services in the United States

One of the following three courses:

  • SOCI101 Introduction to Sociology
  • SOCI102 Social Problems
  • ANTH103 Introduction to Anthropology

Additional requirements:

  • SOCI247 Race & Ethnicity
  • SOAN301 Theories of Culture and Society
  • SOAN302 Methods of Social Research
  • Either SOCI251 Criminology or SOCI327 Sociology of Medicine
  • Either ANTH362 Gender in Cross-Cultural Perspective or ANTH 364 Cities in Global Perspective
  • MATH106 Introduction to Statistics (as prerequisite to SOAN302)
  • PSYC101 or 102 Introduction to Psychology
  • PSYC355 Theories of Counseling

One of the following three courses (as prerequisite to PSYC355):

  • PSYC221 Lifespan Development
  • PSYC236 Abnormal Psychology
  • PSYC240 Personality

Requirements for the Human Services Minor

(not available to Sociology and Anthropology Majors)

A minor in Human Services requires six courses in the department and one course outside the department. Requirements in the department include:

SOCI 101 or SOCI 102 or ANTH 103

SOCI 180 Introduction to Human Services in the United States

SOCI 247 Race and Ethnicity

SOAN 301 Theories of Culture and Society

SOAN 302 Methods of Social Research (Psychology majors may substitute PSYC 202 for SOAN 302).

SOCI 251 Criminology or SOCI 327 Sociology of Medicine

PSYC 101 Introduction to Psychology

Course Prerequisites:

SOCI 101 or SOCI 102 or ANTH 103 are prerequisites for all 200 and 300 level course. If students have not fulfilled this prerequisite for a 200 0r 300 level course, they may ask for the permission of the instructor to join such a course.
