National Scholarships

Welcome to the Monmouth College National Scholarships, Fellowships and Competitive Internships website.  HERE you will find information and advice about the most distinguished academic honors and opportunities available to Monmouth College students.

Monmouth students of exceptional academic achievement and ambition are likely candidates for a national scholarship, fellowship or competitive internship. Many prestigious national opportunities are available to our students, most of which award funding for graduate study, fellowship positions or independent research and travel.  A number of competitive scholarships are available to sophomore, junior and senior students during their undergraduate study.  We encourage you to learn as much as you can about these resources and opportunities.

There are two types of national scholarships:

  • Those for which an Institutional Nomination is REQUIRED. You cannot apply on your own for these scholarships. You must compete for internal selection before your nomination is forwarded by the College.

  • Those to which you can apply directly.

We are happy to provide you with information about the national scholarships, fellowships and competitive internships for which you are eligible as an academically accomplished Monmouth College student.  We can also help you plan experiences that will assist you in developing your portfolio. Many of these national, competitive opportunities require that you prepare well in advance.  Take careful note of internal campus deadline as well as external competition deadlines. Begin preparing now!

All national scholarship applications take a great deal of thought and preparation. If you are seriously interested in applying, we recommend that you contact the Mellinger Teaching and Learning Center AT LEAST three months prior to the application deadline. HERE is a Work Sheet you may use as you begin to draft your application essay / personal statement for a particular opportunity.

In addition, you should talk with your academic advisor early in your college career about your interest in pursuing a competitive national scholarship, fellowship or prestigious internship. Preparation for a national scholarship can begin as early as your first year at college, as you explore possibilities regarding the courses, co-curricular activities, special academic opportunities such as summer research and study abroad, and preparation for graduate school
