Monmouth / Academics / Faculty Profile

Judy A. Peterson

Academic Biography:
Prior to teaching I was working in the accounting discipline as an auditor: first with Ernst & Whinney (now Ernst & Young), and then with Jockey International. I also worked in the finance discipline at First Tennessee Bank and again with Ernst. I have had my CPA certification since 1993. Actually, I fell into teaching after the birth of my twins. I fell in love and haven't looked back. Teaching is a very rewarding career. I love to design pedagogy that gets students motivated and inspires them to learn lmore. Monmouth College provides a wonderful environment for creativity since it is a learning centered institution. Here it is all about the student. I love working with the students and their "ah-ha" moments are priceless.

Research Interests:
My interests take me into the financial accounting field versus managerial accounting. I also have a strong interest in international accounting standards and the "give and take" that is currently going on with the merging of United States accounting standards and international accounting standards.

Selected Research and/or Creative Work:
I am the coordinator of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program on campus. We have grown tremendously over the last 12 years from a club oriented activity into one that is now embedded in one of our senior general education citizenship courses. Students from all disciplines learn what it's like to be involved in a discussion about taxes and how those taxes affect our lives, as well as learning how to prepare their own return and to assist others.
