Educational Studies

Teachers serve a vital role in society, and Monmouth College has a long and distinguished tradition of preparing select individuals for teaching careers.

Becoming an accomplished teacher involves personal commitment and extensive professional preparation. The Educational Studies department relies upon a conceptual framework which is founded upon the believe that one should be committed to the principles of expertise, integration, responsiveness, empowerment, and community.

Monmouth College faculty believe that an education that cultivates both the desire to learn and the ability to teach is firmly grounded in the liberal arts. A well conceived liberal arts education nurtures intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, an examination of diverse cultural and social practices, and an open-minded free exchange of ideas.

Monmouth College considers the liberal arts to be the expression of humanity dedicated to advancing those ideals and practices considered essential for the re-creation of a pluralistic, moral, and well-educated society. At Monmouth College, we believe education is a fundamentally transforming experience which benefits all who actively participate.

Educational Studies Department Requirements
Students must successfully complete Foundations of Education (EDUC 100), and pass the ICTS Basic Skills Test to be admitted to the program. In order to student teach, candidates must have a grade point average of 2.75 in three domains: Educational Studies coursework, coursework within the discipline they are preparing to teach, as well as all coursework taken at the college.

Certificates and Endorsements
The Educational Studies Department currently offers a major in elementary education and course work leading to an initial Illinois teacher certificate. Illinois teaching certificates available through Monmouth College include: Elementary (Type 03), Secondary (Type 09), and K-12 Special (Type 10). A variety of optional endorsements to the initial certificate in specific content areas may be earned through the completion of additional coursework, the most common being the middle level endorsement.

Professionalism and Activism
Students preparing for a teaching career may participate in several education related programs; the campus chapter of the Illinois Education Association student organization, the educational honor society Kappa Delta Pi. In addition, several candidates each year in the Teacher Education Program are awarded the highly regarded Golden Apple Scholarship.
